Understanding Roles
What is a school psychologist?
State certified school psychologists serve students in each school. Using their clinical evaluation skills and specialized knowledge of the learning process and the importance of interpersonal relations, they attempt to ensure that the educational program will help students reach their full potential. Psychologists may observe students in class, perform in-depth psychological evaluations, consult with teachers, or see students and/or parents/guardians, individually or in groups in a confidential setting. A request for psychological services can be made by school personnel, parents/guardians or the student themselves.
School Psychologists Work With Students and Their Families to:
- Identify and address learning and behavior problems that interfere with school success
- Evaluate eligibility for special education services (within a multidisciplinary team)
- Support students' social, emotional, and behavioral health
- Provide counseling support with evidence-based interventions such as, but not limited to Second Step, The Zones of Regulation, SuperFlex, Educate 2B and MissionBe.
- Teach parenting skills and enhance home–school collaboration
- Make referrals and help coordinate community support services
School Psychologists Work With Teachers to:

School Psychologists Work With Administrators to:
- Collect and analyze data related to school improvement, student outcomes, and accountability requirements
- Implement school-wide prevention programs that help maintain positive school climates conducive to learning
- Promote school policies and practices that ensure the safety of all students by reducing school violence, bullying, and harassment
- Respond to crises by providing leadership, direct services, and coordination with needed community services
- Design, implement, and garner support for comprehensive school mental health programming
School Psychologists Work With Community Providers to:
- Coordinate the delivery of services to students and their families in and outside of school
- Help students transition to and from school and community learning environments, such as residential treatment or juvenile justice programs
What is a school social worker?
Herricks' social workers are available for individual, group, and family consultation, staff consultation, home visits and as a liaison with community agencies and resources. Social workers are involved with parents/guardians, students and other school staff in educational programs, teaching curriculum units dealing with personal safety and coping with stress and also conducts parenting and student groups.
